How to get PrEP in NYC with no insurance
Last checked July 2026
The short answer
You do not need insurance to get PrEP in NYC. The PrEP Assistance Program (PrEP-AP) covers PrEP-related clinic visits and lab work for eligible NYC residents, regardless of insurance or immigration status. The medication itself is covered through insurance, Medicaid, or manufacturer assistance programs.
What PrEP is
PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) reduces the risk of getting HIV from sex by about 99% when used as prescribed. It's available in NYC as a daily pill or as long-acting injections every 2 or 6 months.
What you'll need
You'll need an HIV test before starting PrEP. The daily pill typically means follow-up visits every 2–3 months; longer-acting injectable options are monitored on their own schedule. Some PrEP options also require additional lab monitoring, such as kidney tests for the daily pill.
Look for a clinic marked "PrEP-AP Registered" — these clinics are enrolled in the assistance program. You can filter for this on the map.
If you're undocumented
PrEP is available regardless of immigration status. Clinics are not required to ask about or report immigration status.
If you're under 18
New York State law allows any person who has the capacity to consent — regardless of age — to receive PrEP and related services without parental consent or notification. Records for these services are confidential.
