Frequently asked
Is abortion legal in NYC?
Yes. The Reproductive Health Act (2019) protects the right to abortion in New York.
Where can I get abortion pills for free in NYC?
Four NYC Health Department Sexual Health Clinics provide medication abortion at no cost, regardless of insurance or immigration status: Fort Greene (Brooklyn), Jamaica (Queens), Morrisania (Bronx), and Central Harlem (Manhattan). Call the Sexual Health Clinic hotline at 347-396-7959 to schedule. Fort Greene, Jamaica, and Central Harlem also take walk-ins until 2 p.m.; at Morrisania, call first.
Can I get abortion pills by mail in New York?
Abortion pills can currently be prescribed by telehealth and mailed to New York addresses. A May 2026 Supreme Court order keeps that in place while federal court cases and an FDA review of mifepristone continue. If anything changes, the NYC Abortion Access Hub will have current options.
How much does an abortion cost in NYC?
New York Medicaid covers abortion. If you're pregnant and uninsured, you may qualify for Medicaid at a higher income limit than usual, regardless of immigration status, and some providers can enroll you the same day. If you have other insurance, ask your plan what it covers. If cost is still a barrier, the Hub and the New York Abortion Access Fund (212-252-4757) help with payment.
How late in pregnancy can I get an abortion in NYC?
New York law protects the right to abortion up to 24 weeks of pregnancy, and after 24 weeks when the patient's health is at risk or the fetus is not viable. Availability still varies by clinic within that — each sets its own cutoff. If no clinic matches your stage of pregnancy, call the NYC Abortion Access Hub for help finding later-term or procedural care.
Do minors need parental consent for abortion in NYC?
No. Parental consent is not required in New York State for abortion.
